The Role & The Opportunity
Utah State University, a premier land- and space-grant institution and a competitive leader in the Mountain West Conference, invites nominations and applications for the position of Vice President and Director of Athletics. This is a cabinet-level appointment, reporting directly to the University President, and serves as the chief executive for Utah State’s NCAA Division I athletic department.
This executive will provide visionary leadership and strategic direction for a department comprising 16 varsity sports, over 400 student-athletes, and a dedicated team of coaches and staff. The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects of the department, including fiscal affairs, personnel, strategic planning, facilities, fundraising, and external relations, while ensuring unwavering commitment to student-athlete well-being, academic success, and a culture of integrity and competitive excellence.

Alan L. Smith, Interim President of Utah State
Smith has over 27 years of experience in higher education, both as a faculty member and as an administrator. Prior to joining Utah State, Smith served nine years as professor and chairperson of the Department of Kinesiology at Michigan State University, held professorship positions at Purdue University from 1998 to 2012, and began his career in 1997 at the University of Virginia. He has also held visiting professorships in Finland and the United Kingdom.
